Johannes Casper

Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany

Johannes Casper was active in Flensburg in the post-war period. Historical directory material lists Johann Casper at Wrangelstraße 4, Flensburg, in 1951 and 1955, while the surviving Fleetenkieker bottle carries the name Johannes Casper, Flensburg, directly linking the company with the aquavit.

Possible connection with Johannes Casper in Lauenburg in Pommern

The Flensburg business may have been connected with an older Johannes Casper company from Lauenburg in Pommern, today Lębork in Poland. The shared name, the same involvement in the spirits trade and the appearance of Johann Casper in Flensburg a few years after the Casper family left Lauenburg in 1945 make a post-war continuation plausible, although a direct documentary link between the two businesses has not yet been established.

The Lauenburg company traced its origins to 1856. Period advertising used the wording Johannes Casper, Stammhaus gegründet 1856 and described the business as a Spritfabrik, Dampfdestillation, Monopolbetrieb and Likörfabrik. Its documented products included Primasprit, drinking spirits, Casper liqueurs and Monopolin, an alcohol-based motor fuel. Trade directories record Johannes Casper as a spirit factory from at least 1912 and later list the business under both Likörfabrik and Destillation, with Eva Casper recorded as proprietor during the interwar period.

The operation extended beyond liqueur production. Accounts of the Lauenburg premises describe offices and production rooms used for bottling, labelling and packing, alongside activities involving fuel, fruit juice and a company bank. The Casper family retained the property until March 1945.
