Fjordin Crossin Aquavit was a limited, event-specific release from The Hardware Distillery in Hoodsport, Washington. The spirit was created as part of the annual Fjordin Crossin celebration, a local homage to the historic Linie Aquavit tradition of sending barrels on a sea voyage to shape their character. Instead of crossing the equator, The Hardware Distillery launched a barrel of its aged Dill Aquavit across Hood Canal—the only saltwater fjord in the lower 48 states—sending it from the Port of Hoodsport to Tahuya and back.

Before the crossing, a parade traveled from the distillery to the dock, led by Scandinavian musicians and members of the Sons of Norway who escorted the aquavit barrel. When the barrel was placed on a boat, it began its short maritime journey, gently rocked by the waters of Hood Canal. The idea mirrored the belief that movement, sea air, and shifting temperatures influence the spirit’s final character.

While the barrel was underway, the Paddle the Canal Challenge took place, where participants in kayaks, canoes, SUPs, and small sailboats crossed the fjord alongside the aquavit. Spectators watched from the waterfront, from the Aquavit Grotto tucked under the pier, or aboard the Lady Alderbrook, where aquavit cocktails were served during the two-hour cruise. Food vendors, Scandinavian snacks, oysters from local farms, children’s activities, and a street fair contributed to the atmosphere.

Upon the barrel’s return to Hoodsport, an award ceremony for the paddlers followed, and an after-party at the distillery featured bottling of the Fjordin Crossin Aquavit with complimentary samples. Each year, the release was limited and available only at the distillery during the event. The aquavit itself was based on the distillery’s dill-forward recipe, flavored with caraway, dill, coriander, fennel seed, and citrus peel, offering a bright, herbal Nordic profile shaped symbolically by its brief voyage across the fjord.
