The first batch of Stein Eriksen 52 Aquavit was produced by Alpine Distilling in collaboration with Stein Eriksen Lodge. A total of 200 bottles were released, and this limited edition marked the beginning of the project. The aquavit was introduced to the public on December 15, 2019, a day dedicated to honoring the legacy of Norwegian skier Stein Eriksen. Stein Eriksen Lodge, which carries his name, reflects his long association with the resort, where he worked for many years and became a symbol of Deer Valley’s skiing culture.
The production was based on Utah-grown Winter Wheat and 2-Row barley, which were mashed, fermented, and distilled. The spirit was then transferred to a barrel for aging, bottled, and delivered to Stein Eriksen Lodge.
The flavor profile was shaped by components including European caraway seeds, Moroccan orris root, Egyptian coriander, Indian cumin, and American orange peel. The aquavit was characterized by its “liquid gold” color and a complex aroma. It was described as suitable for enjoying chilled on its own or in signature cocktails served at the Glitretind restaurant in Deer Valley.
After all 200 bottles were used, the barrel from the first batch was passed on to Red Rock Brewing, which produced a special beer aged in that same barrel.
About the producer
Alpine Distilling
Park City, Utah, United States
Alpine Distilling is a craft distillery in Park City, Utah, founded by Rob and Sara Sergent and opened in 2016. Rob Sergent came to distilling after careers with the NFL and Johnson & Johnson, drawing on a family distilling tradition rooted in Kentucky, while Sara Sergent developed the botanical side of the business and today serves as CEO and Master Distiller.
Production takes place at the distillery in Park City’s Silver Creek area. Alpine uses two principal stills: a traditional jacketed copper pot still for whiskey and a custom pressure-driven vapor-extraction column still for botanical spirits. The company also uses local aquifer water in its production. Its portfolio has included whiskey, gin, vodka, liqueurs and limited or private-label botanical spirits.
Botanical distillation has become a particular focus under Sara Sergent. Alpine describes its process as vapor extraction of botanicals under controlled proof, pressure and speed, while its whiskey production follows a separate program based around pot distillation and maturation in American oak. The distillery remains based at 7132 Silver Creek Road, Park City, with a separate bar and retail operation on Main Street.
Alpine Distilling has also produced custom spirits for several hospitality clients, including Stein Eriksen Lodge Deer Valley. In 2019 the distillery collaborated with the Lodge on Stein Eriksen 52 Aquavit, a private-label barrel-aged aquavit created in tribute to Norwegian skier Stein Eriksen. The first release comprised only 200 bottles and debuted at the Lodge on December 15, 2019, Stein Day. The aquavit was produced from Utah winter wheat and Utah two-row barley before fermentation, distillation, seasoning and barrel maturation.
