Der Edle SKOL Echter Flensburger Aquavit was a German aquavit produced in Flensburg by Hans A. Sönnichsen. Bottled at 40% ABV, it formed part of the company’s historical spirits range alongside its better-known Flensburg-style rum products.
The aquavit was marketed under the distinctive name SKOL, with the label also identifying it as “Echter Flensburger Aquavit” – genuine Flensburg aquavit. The surviving bottle contains a clear, colorless spirit. Hans A. Sönnichsen expanded into spirits after establishing his Flensburg beverage business in 1946, making SKOL part of a locally produced range aimed largely at the regional hospitality and catering trade.
The expression is now a historical, discontinued product.
About the producer
Hans A. Sönnichsen
Flensburg, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
Hans A. Sönnichsen founded his beverage business in Flensburg in 1946, initially producing soda water and other non-alcoholic drinks. The company had access to its own deep well, and over the following years Sönnichsen expanded into spirits, including liqueurs, aquavit and, most notably, his own blends of Jamaica rum.
The business developed into a regional beverage producer and supplier serving Flensburg, the surrounding area and southern Denmark. A substantial part of its output went to restaurants, hotels and other catering customers rather than exclusively to retail.
Hans A. Sönnichsen’s son Eckhard Sönnichsen joined the family business in 1969 after completing his apprenticeship at the well-known Flensburg rum house Pott. He had already been involved in the family operation from an early age and later continued the company’s spirits activities.
Hans A. Sönnichsen died in 2000. The company subsequently continued under the family name; later listings identify Hans A. Sönnichsen GmbH & Co. KG at Apenrader Straße 69, 24939 Flensburg. Surviving later-period rum bottlings also use this corporate name.
