Plotz Matjes Aquavit
Glückstadt, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany
Plotz Matjes Aquavit is produced by Plotz Spezialitäten GmbH in Glückstadt and was developed in 2012 as an aquavit specifically intended to accompany Glückstadt Matjes. The idea came from Henning Plotz, who wanted an aquavit that would match the regional tradition of drinking “Lebenswasser” with a Matjes sandwich. The recipe differs clearly from the typical northern German caraway-based Kümmel/Köm. It is designed to be milder, with fine herbal notes and a distinct orange note placed at the end of the flavour profile. The aquavit is intended to give a rounded finish after eating Matjes, following the local preference for a slightly sweet counterpoint after a hearty meal. The recommended serving temperature is lightly chilled rather than ice-cold, in order to show the full range of aromas. Ingredients include water, ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin, natural caraway and dill seed distillates, sugar and caramel syrup.
