Philipp Becker Aquavit is a German aquavit produced in Fürstenau, Lower Saxony, by Kornbrennerei Philipp Becker. The current bottling is released at 38% vol. in a 700 ml format. The distillery describes it as having a mild, pleasant caraway note and recommends serving it ice-cold, particularly as an aperitif.
The aquavit has been part of the distillery’s range for at least two generations of the Sandhaus family. An earlier bottle version names Hubert Sandhaus as proprietor, while the present distillery has been run by his son Ludger Sandhaus since 2010. The current product retains the same 38% vol. strength and 0.7-litre format documented by the producer today.
The aquavit is described by the distillery as having a mild caraway character, but the full botanical recipe and production details are not disclosed.
About the producer
Kornbrennerei Philipp Becker
Fürstenau, Niedersachsen, Germany
Kornbrennerei Philipp Becker is a historic spirits distillery in Fürstenau, Lower Saxony, established in 1830 by the Philipp Becker family. The business was entered in the commercial register that year and has remained at Bahnhofstraße 18 in Fürstenau, producing its own regional spirits for the town and surrounding area.
After the Second World War, Hubert Sandhaus began working at the distillery. As the descendants of the Becker family had no children, Sandhaus eventually took over the business during the 1970s. Following his sudden death in 2010, his son Ludger Sandhaus, himself a trained master distiller, assumed responsibility for the company with support from his mother Gisela.
The distillery continues to produce a broad range of spirits, including Korn, aged Doppelkorn, Wacholder, aquavit and numerous liqueurs and regional specialities. It also produces customized bottlings and labels for local customers and businesses.
Today the business continues as Kornbrennerei Philipp Becker, Inhaber Ludger Sandhaus, at its historic Fürstenau location.
