Echter Hamburger Aquavit was a clear German aquavit from Hamburg, produced by Hamburg-Zanzibar in the Alstertal and bottled at 40% vol. in a 500 ml bottle. Its documented botanical profile combines caraway, fennel seed and star anise, while additional ingredients were kept undisclosed. The aquavit was distilled in a small 40-litre still, with the production process—from the selection of ingredients through distillation and bottling—carried out by hand. Contemporary product information described production in batches of around 500 bottles.

The original bottling was presented simply as Echter Hamburger Aquavit and was colourless. It was intended both for drinking neat— including chilled after a meal or over ice—and as an alternative to gin in mixed drinks such as a tonic serve.

Echter Hamburger Aquavit appears to be the earlier form of the product later sold as Hanseatic Aquavit. The later expression was likewise bottled at 40% vol. and 500 ml, remained clear, and retained caraway, fennel and anise as its central botanicals. Significantly, the later bottle itself still carried the wording “Echter Hamburger” beneath Hanseatic Aquavit. Its production description also refers to slow distillation of caraway, fennel, anise and five additional ingredients. Taken together, these similarities strongly suggest a continuation of the same clear aquavit under revised branding.
