Blekksprut Aquavit

Unaged Aquavit Discontinued

Blekksprut Aquavit was produced by Sound Spirits, a Seattle-based distillery known as the first craft distillery in the city since Prohibition. Production of this aquavit has ended, as Sound Spirits later ceased operations in 2023.

The spirit was marketed as a Scandinavian-style aquavit made “Seattle style”, distilled with a botanical profile of caraway, dill, coriander, fennel, and anise. Before the rebrand, the distillery had released this same formula under the earlier name Sound Spirits Aquavit, which featured a different label but the same core botanical character. The new name, “Blekksprut”, translates from Norwegian as “octopus”-literally “ink squirt”-and inspired both the updated identity and the redesigned label introduced in March 2015.

Blekksprut Aquavit was recommended to be enjoyed chilled—neat, over ice, or in cocktails. It appeared in local drink features, including Seattle bartenders’ recipes such as the Salt Lakrits Collins, which used Blekksprut for its pronounced licorice-driven character.

Sound Spirits operated a no-frills tasting room in Seattle’s Interbay neighborhood and, during its active years, was regarded as one of the city’s more prolific small-batch distillers. The aquavit was available at the distillery and through local retailers, including QFC.
