Anker Aquavit is produced by Mecklenburger Spirituosenfabrik G. Winkelhausen GmbH in Güstrow. According to the declared ingredients and the information provided on the producer’s website, the spirit is based on neutral grain distillate and flavoured with natural caraway aroma, natural lemon aroma and other natural flavours, rather than with a caraway or dill distillate.

Under EU Regulation (EC) No 110/2008 on spirit drinks, “akvavit” or “aquavit” is defined as a caraway and/or dill-seed flavoured spirit drink that is flavoured with a distillate of plants or spices and has a minimum alcoholic strength of 37.5% vol.

If the characteristic caraway profile is created solely by added natural aromas and no caraway or dill distillate is used, the product does not fully comply with this formal EU definition of aquavit, even though it is marketed under the name “Anker Aquavit”.
