SPO Aquavit

Unaged Aquavit Discontinued

SPO Aquavit is a regional Kümmel-based aquavit from St. Peter-Ording (Schleswig-Holstein, Germany), created by Diedrich Maack, owner of Getränkeland Loma GmbH. The idea emerged in early 2012 when Maack decided to develop and market his own local spirit. Production and bottling take place at Robert Meisner GmbH & Co. KG Spirituosenfabrik in Heide, ensuring that the entire manufacturing process remains within the region – a point Maack repeatedly emphasizes.

The aquavit was launched on 8 May 2012, shortly after the brand filed its patent application in April 2012. With 40% vol, it is described as mild, warm, and aromatic, produced without artificial flavors or colorants. Its recipe is kept confidential. Restaurants in St. Peter-Ording, Westerhever, Tating, Garding and Wesselburen quickly became partners; within months, branded glasses and table cards were supplied specifically for local gastronomy.

SPO Aquavit achieved several key milestones:

  • 5,000 bottles sold by October 2013
  • 10,000 bottles sold by May 2015
  • Awarded the DLG Silver Medal in April 2015 (Deutsche Landwirtschafts-Gesellschaft)
  • Complete brand update (new label & website) in May 2016

The bottle design presents a maritime theme featuring the St. Peter-Ording lighthouse and a warm, amber-like color. Although originally conceived as a “regional short,” SPO Aquavit soon attracted nationwide orders from visitors who discovered it while vacationing on the North Sea coast.
