About the producer
A.F. Nagel
Hamburg, Germany
A.F. Nagel was a Hamburg wine and spirits business traditionally dated to 1848 and associated with Albertus Friedrich Nagel. The company began as a wine merchant and expanded substantially over the following decades, developing into one of Hamburg’s larger wine and spirits trading businesses. Its activities included the import and sale of wine as well as its own spirits and liqueur production.
By the first decades of the twentieth century, A.F. Nagel operated a sizeable network in Hamburg. Historical accounts describe seven branches, two additional establishments, storage facilities, a subsidiary wine cellar and a dedicated spirits and liqueur factory by around 1935.
The company also maintained tasting and retail premises in the city. One of the best known was the Bodega Nagel in Kirchenallee, opposite Hamburg Hauptbahnhof. The site originally served as a sales and tasting room for the A.F. Nagel business and later developed into a restaurant and drinking establishment that survives today under the Nagel name. Sources place the establishment on Kirchenallee from the 1920s.
